Visitors

Visitors to Australia usually have three main reasons for visiting Australia. They are: to visit as a tourist, to visit friends and relatives, or to visit for business purposes. The periods of stay can also be varied.

Many visitors, depending on their nationality, can now apply for Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) to come to Australia under the 3 reasons provided. The ETA is normally obtained through the travel agent.

Nationals of non-ETA countries can apply for the following visas:

Non-Business Visit (i.e. tourism and/or social visit)

  • Tourist visa (subclass 676) for a stay of up to usually 3 months. Longer periods can be considered depending on the circumstances.

  • Sponsored Family Visitor visa (subclass 679)

  • For people who may have difficulty accessing a subclass 676 visa to visit family, a subclass 679 application requiring a formal sponsorship by the Australian relative is an alternative option to consider.

    Business Visit

  • Business (Short Stay) visa (subclass 456)

  • For business people making a short business visit to Australia for up to three months, they can apply for a 456 visa. Business activities may include a conference, a negotiation or a exploratory business visit, or a visit to conduct business with an Australia-based organisation. The visit is not one which includes acting, musical performances or commercial film making.

  • Sponsored Business Visitor (Short Stay) visa (subclass 459)

  • Like the subclass 679 visa, this visa is for business people who may have difficulties obtaining a subclass 456 visa, or may not be eligible for an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA). This alternative option will require them to have an approved sponsor in Australia who will sponsor them for short business visits of up to three months.
