Temporary Residence

Temporary Residence visas permit people to come to Australia and live here temporarily for up to 4 years. There are a big variety of visa categories, but they can best be broken up into Business and Non-Business Visas:

Business Visas

  • Temporary Business (Long Stay) (Subclass 457):This visa allows approved Australian employers to sponsor highly skilled people to work for them in Australia for up to four years. The prospective employer must first apply to become a standard business sponsor, which will permit them to sponsor an agreed number of overseas employees over a two-year period. The position nominated to be filled by the overseas employee must meet minimum English language, skill and salary levels.

  • Non-Business Visas

  • Social & Cultural Visas: There is a wide spectrum of visas in this group. The list is not exhaustive but they include:

  • -- Educational visas which permits mainly education and research institutions to bring in teachers and scholars from overseas;

    -- Entertainment visas to bring in entertainers to Australia;

    -- Media and Film Crew visas for journalists, film and television crew reporting for overseas use;

    -- Sport visas for amateur or professional sports people engaging in competition in Australia;

    -- Religious Workervisas such as ministers, priests and spiritual leaders, to serve the spiritual needs of people of their faiths in Australia;

    -- Visiting Academic visas for academics that are on sabbatical or are visiting educational institutions in Australia for a short period to teach or research.

  • Retirement visas - for self-funded retirees who are 55 years or older, have no dependants (other than a spouse who can be any age) and who want to reside in Australia during their retirement years. The visa is temporary and will not lead to Australian permanent residence or citizenship. Visa holders must also be able to make a significant long term financial investment in Australia and meet asset and income requirements.

  • Promoting International relations visas:

  • -- Working Holiday Makers (WHM) visas- This visa allows young people from countries which have bilateral agreements with Australia to experience Australian culture and lifestyle through an extended holiday and incidental employment program, with special focus given to regional Australia.

    -- Work and Holiday visas – This visa is similar to the Working Holiday Maker program, except that Work and Holiday visa applicants must provide a letter of approval from their government agreeing to their stay in Australia, hold tertiary education qualifications and functional English.

    -- Foreign Government Agency visas - for foreign government employees conducting business or teaching duties on behalf of their governments, who do not have diplomatic or official status in Australia.

    -- Occupational Trainee visas – Allows people from overseas to complete structured and supervised workplace-based training program to provide enhanced skills in their current occupations, or fields of expertise.

    -- Professional Development visas – Allows the temporary entry of groups of professionals, managers and government officials from overseas who wish to enhance their professional/managerial skills by taking part in tailored training programs designed by Australian sponsoring agencies.

    -- Exchange visas - for skilled people overseas wanting to broaden their work experience and skills under reciprocal arrangements which allow Australian residents similar opportunities overseas. Includes people seeking entry under certain bilateral exchange agreements.

    -- Diplomatic visas – diplomats accredited to Australian Diplomatic Missions.
